Week of Sept. 6

We are off to a wonderful start in second grade!  We started the year off getting to know eachother and discuss the importance of working together as a team.  We will be doing a program called Have You Filled a Bucket Today?  where the students will have the opportunity on a daily basis to give eachother compliments.

We started the Daily 5 learning block on the first day of school.  The students have been working on choosing good books, reading silently to themselves and reading with a partner. They seem to love that reading time each day!

*Important reminders for Friday, Sept. 9. - BOOKMOBILE and POPCORN DAY

Week of May 16

Last week we were lucky to have some volunteer guest speakers.  Our volunteer firefighter from the Uniontown fire department came in to read a story to the class. She also talked about summer safety with the students.

Max Caiazza's mom, Mrs. Drinkard, did an ecology lesson with each second grade class in our school science garden.  She brought in samples of pond water, tadpoles and animal hides for the students to observe.   The students REALLY enjoyed learning about the wetlands.

Last week we observed our caterpillars as they formed a chrysalis.  Now we are waiting for them to become beautiful butterflies.

We are beginning a unit on the continents.  For this unit Mr. Groholy and I will be team teaching the 7 continents.  The students will have the opportunity to rotate between classrooms.

Language Arts/ Social Studies -

This week we are reading a biography about Abraham Lincoln's life.

Last week each student picked a president to research.  They wrote a paragraph including facts about that president as clues.   In art class they drew a caricature of that president.  We are going to display the projects in the hallway to see if people can Guess Who They Are.
