September 28
Update 9-29-14

Upcoming Deadlines for Periods 2 and 4:
This week, we will complete a short unit on fairy tales, with a focus on conflict, point of view, and the elements of a plot. By Friday, students will write a traditional fairy tale from the first person point of view of a different character. See the Fairy Tales library to the left for the rubric and a plot diagram.
 
Tuesday, September 30: Students will present fairy tale arguments (protagonist vs. antagonist); it is a group project. We will practice on Monday.

Bring headphones to class!

 
Wednesday, October 1: Library day! Periods 2 and 6 only go straight to the library.
 
Thursday, October 2: Due: Plot diagram for a fairy tale from a new point of view.

Friday, October 3: Due: Completed narrative (story),  a fairy tale from a new point of view at the beginning of class. Most students should finish this in class on Thursday; it is only homework if it is not done by the end of Thursday. (Please note that the 6th period deadlines are different because their class has a slightly altered schedule. If you are in my 2nd and 4th period classes, follow the deadlines for 2nd and 4th periods.)
Friday, October 3: Bring a photo you would like to use for your website, or plan to have your picture taken in class!
 
Upcoming Deadlines for Period 6:
We are finishing a writing assessment and then picking up the fairy tale unit, with a focus on conflict, point of view and elements of plot. Tentative deadlines:
 
Wednesday, October 1: Library day! Go straight to the library
 
Friday, October 3: Fairy tale from a different point of view due by the end of class.

 

September 21
Update 9-22-14

Upcoming Deadlines for Periods 2 and 4:

This week, we will discuss context clues and review for a reading assessment on Wednesday. The reading assessment is skills-based; it is testing students on the skills we've been practicing since the beginning of the year. Students should complete the Hunger Games study guide handed out in class on Monday. It is also available in a .pdf file in the Tuesday homework listing below. The questions on the study guide reflect the skills students will need on the test.
On Thursday, we have a writing assessment. Students in the periods 2 and 4 classes practiced for this assessment on Friday, September 19. I will return students' work with comments so that they will be ready for the assessment.
 
Tuesday, September 23: Study guide below MUST be completed by the beginning of class:
KSU students visit 2nd and 4th period classes Tuesday!

 

Wednesday, September 25: Reading assessment. It is skills-based. Questions are similar to those in the review, but it is a new reading selection from a different novel.

 

Thursday, September 26: Writing assessment based on Every Soul a Star.

Upcoming Deadlines for Period 6:
Students in the 6th period class have the same deadlines and activities as those in Periods 2 and 4.

Update 9-15-14

Upcoming Deadlines for Periods 2 and 4:
This week, students will finish their reader's theater presentations and examine symbolism, theme, and context clues in Every Soul a Star:
Monday, September 15: Entire book should be finished. We will have a 10-pt reading quiz over the book.
Tuesday, September 16: Character tracking chart due. Students also should bring headphones or earbuds to class.
Thursday, September 18: MAPS Pre-assessment. Students do not need to study.

 

Upcoming Deadlines for Period 6:
Students will finish their presentations this week. They also should be finished reading Every Soul a Star before class begins tomorrow. Deadlines: 

Monday, September 15: Entire book should be finished. We will have a 10-pt reading quiz over the book.
Wednesday, September 17:  Students should bring headphones or earbuds to class.
Thursday, September 18: MAPS Pre-assessment. Students do not need to study.

Update 9-8-14

Upcoming Deadlines for Periods 2 and 4:

This week, students are reading Every Soul a Star and completing a reader's theater. Look in the "Every Soul a Star Reader's Theater" library on e-Classrooms for the assignment and rubric. All deadlines are for the beginning of class unless otherwise noted:
Monday, September 8: Reading through page 258 due
Wednesday, September 10: Reader's theater script due
Thursday, September 11: Reader's theater presentations begin
Friday, September 12: JA Day - Dress for Success!
Monday, September 15: Book should be finished before class begins.
 
Upcoming Deadlines for Period 6:
Students will begin presenting their signposts this week. Presentation materials must be uploaded to the 6th period drop box before class begins on Monday, September 8. Instructions were given in class.

 

Sixth period students are also presenting a reader's theater with the same deadlines as the 2nd and 4th period classes for reading the book and writing and performing their reader's theater.

 

August 25
Weekly Update 8-25-14

This week, students are reading Every Soul a Star and writing about a special memory that has been photographed. All deadlines are for the beginning of class unless otherwise noted:

Tuesday, August 26: Bring a photo that shows an important memory.
 Reading through page 73 due
Wednesday, August 27: Reading through page 115 due
Photo questionnaire due
Thursday, August 28: Reading through page 134 due
Typed draft of photo memory will be due at the end of class
Friday, August 29: No School
Check the "Photo Memory" library on the left for the photo questionnaire and checklist for the writing assignment.

Upcoming Deadlines

In the early school year, we'll focus on narratives, beginning with an exploration of our own lives. Here are deadlines to remember:

Wednesday, August 20: Name/hat poem due

Wednesday, August 20: Bring simple, school-appropriate props for photos  (a football jersey, a game controller, etc.)

Friday, August 22: Supplies due

Friday, August 22: Bring pictures, words and phrases from magazines, etc., - or bring in your favorite magazines - to decorate your journal cover

Tuesday, August 26: Bring in a photo that shows an important memory. We will write about this memory.

Friday, Sept. 5: First Fantastic Word due!

May 26
Weekly Update 5-26-14

English Periods 1, 2, 4 and 6 for the week of May 26:

With this being the last week of school, we will wrap up all projects in progress. All work - which for most students is a letter and/or dialogue photo story - should be finished by the end of class Tuesday. Anything not completed in class will be homework due before class begins on Wednesday.

English Period 5 for the week of May 26:



This week, we will just wrap up all projects in progress. I will return students' letters tomorrow, and they can correct and print out the final copies in class.

Students should select their three favorite quotes to share from their independent reading book before class tomorrow. If they have made a PowerPoint, they can upload it at the beginning of class if they have not had time to upload it before then.

This week in 8th grade English, we will finish our dialogue stories and letters. No homework is planned unless students do not finish the assignments in class.


English Period 5 for the week of May 19:



This week, students will write letters and read their independent reading books. No homework other than reading is planned for the week unless students do not finish the assignments in class.

This week in 8th grade English, we will finish dialogue stories and move on to writing letters to someone who has made a difference. No homework is planned unless students do not finish the assignments in class.


English Period 5 for the week of May 12:



This week, students will finish their author essays and begin their independent reading books. No homework is planned unless students do not finish the assigned work in class.
