Welcome Back!

I hope everybody had a fantastic summer and are all ready for another fun school year! My name is Jenna Rosso and I will be your child's physical education teacher this year!  I believe that we must teach students from a young age the importance of healthy living. My goal is for your child to develop not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally in my class.  Teaching students to set goals for themselves and to work to achieve them is something I want my students to take away from this year.  Working with others in a positive way in order to be successful is a key element I focus on.

Your child will have physical education once a week.  Please make sure that he or she is prepared every week in order to create the safest environment for your child.  Below is a list of things your child needs when attending my class.

1. Tennis Shoes- Your child needs to be wearing tennis shoes on the day he or she comes to my class.  They do not have to be new or separate from his or her every day shoes if you do not wish.  I do ask that the soles of the shoes are generally clean in terms of mud and dirt for the safety of your child.

-Sandals, Crocs, Flip Flops, Boots, and Dress Shoes are NOT acceptable.

2. Socks should be worn by your child in order to prevent blisters from forming.  Your child will be moving around a lot in my class and socks will only be beneficial.

3. Comfortable clothing should be worn for my class as your child will be participating in various physical activities.

With your help at home I know we can make a difference and get your child practicing good lifelong habits while having fun! Thank you for your help and support!

Please feel free to contact me at any time!

Until Winter Break!

This week, students are learning about 4 different types of fitness (cardio, strength, muscle endurance, and flexibility.)  They are also playing the game of scooter hockey and identifying which types of fitness it helps improve.

Next week, students are completing an exercise circuit with different exercises. The focus is for students to understand what part of their body they are working on. For example, some stations require balance, others arm strength, leg strength, and cardio.

Our final week before winter break will consist of the Reindeer Games! This is a combination of fun holiday games to keep the students having fun and active.

Fitness Testing

We have just finished working on our over hand and underhand throwing and completed an obstacle course over the past 2 weeks.  We are now moving on to fitness testing.  As mandated by the state of Ohio, students will be graded on their performance in the following 3 categories.

·         Aerobic Capacity/Cardio-vascular Endurance – move around the area using any locomotor skill for two or more minutes without stopping.

·         Muscular Strength and Endurance –  Move across the room in a crab-walk or seal-walk position without stopping (15-20 meters). Hold a bridge, push-up or plank position on the hands and feet for 30 seconds.

·         Flexibility – Bend over and touch the toes

We have just finished up working on throwing and catching using footballs and are moving on to fall fitness testing.  Over the next 2 weeks, students will be challenging themselves to perform to their best abilities in several different fitness activities.  Push ups, sit ups, pull ups, long jump, shuttle run, half mile for 3rd and 4th grade or mile run for 5th grade, and the PACER run are all components of the test.

Following completion of the tests, students will set personal goals for themselves when they are tested in the same areas again in the spring.
