Welcome to Mrs. Harms' Afternoon Language Arts Class!

In Language Arts this year, we will explore a variety of genres in reading, including but not limited to realistic fiction, poetry, biographies, folk tales and informational text.  We will also practice our writing skills for many purposes.  We will write letters, journal entries, informational reports, persuasive essays, personal narratives, and fictional narratives.

WEEKLY ROUTINES FOR LANGUAGE ARTS:  Each week, unless otherwise noted in student agendas, students will be responsible for the following tasks:

1. Students will bring an independent reading book to class each day, and periodically complete written booknotes to reflect on their reading. Each nine weeks, students will also be required to accumulate Accelerated Reader Points by taking short computerized quizzes over the books they read.
1st quarter: pass 2 tests, one fiction, one non-fiction
2nd quarter: earn 10 points, at least three of which are non-fiction
3rd quarter:
earn 12 points, at least three of which are non-fiction
4th quarter: earn 12 points, at least three of which are non-fiction

2. Students will have 15 spelling words to practice for two week periods.  (Tests will be given every other Friday) These words will be listed in your child's agenda. The lists may be individualized, so your child's words may be different from his/her classmates' words.

Students will also work on writer's notebooks during the week at school. If they have not completed them adequately during given class time, they should be completed for homework.

Please feel free to email or call me if you have any question or concerns.  Thank you for your support in helping your child to become a better reader and writer!
