Services at Lake Elementary

Students that receive services at Lake Elementary are placed in classes taught by a gifted intervention specialist (GIS) in language arts and mathematics.  Students receiving gifted services  at Lake Elementary receive instruction addressing Ohio’s New Learning Standards which is differentiated through materials used and the resulting pace, breadth, and depth of study completed. Through the use of pre-assessment strategies and curriculum compacting, students are exposed to grade level standards at a more rapid pace.  Specific experiences different from a traditional classroom include:

  • Quarterly long-term projects which engage students in real world research, higher level thinking skills, and  creative thinking.
  • Weekly challenges to help student practice logic, analysis, and problem solving skills.
  • Spelling units and lessons that focus around students understanding Latin and Greek word derivations.
  • Daily response journal writing prompts followed by student discussions that expand on the prompt requiring student extension and hypothesis.
  • Quarterly independent reading goals incorporating Bloom’s taxonomy.
  • Collaboration between 4th and 4th grade classrooms for select activities.
